CHEESY PHILLY CHEESESTEAK BREAD
- Author: Dorothy Miller
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 oz. thinly cut Ribeye Steak
- ½ teaspoon Kosher salt, divided
- ¼ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper, divided
- 1 teaspoon canola oil
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
- 4 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 1 French loaf, split in half lengthwise
- ⅓ cup mayonnaise
- 8 ounces sliced Provolone cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures your oven reaches the correct temperature for baking later in the process.
- Season the steak with half the salt and pepper, and coat evenly with the canola oil. This preparation step ensures the steak is well-flavored and ready for searing.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat for 2 minutes. Then, add the seasoned steak to the skillet, searing it without stirring or rotating for a specified time on each side to develop a nice crust. (Note: The original instructions did not mention the actual searing time for the steak, which is typically 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare, depending on thickness.)
- Add Worcestershire sauce to the skillet after flipping the steak to enhance its flavor.
- Remove the steak from the pan. In the same skillet, add the remaining salt and pepper, along with the butter, green bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Sauté these ingredients for 3-4 minutes or until they are slightly browned, absorbing the flavors left from the steak.
- Spread mayonnaise on both halves of the bread. This adds moisture and flavor to the sandwich.
- Assemble the sandwich by laying down half of the provolone cheese on the bottom half of the bread. Then, add the cooked steak (sliced against the grain) and the sautéed vegetables on top, finishing with the remaining cheese. This layering ensures that every bite has a good mix of flavors and textures.
- Bake the assembled sandwich in the preheated oven on the center rack for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread turns golden brown. This final step brings all the components together, melting the cheese and crisping the bread to perfection.
Remember, for best results, let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing to keep it juicy. Adjust seasoning to taste, and feel free to modify the amount of mayonnaise, cheese, or vegetables according to your preferences.
